The massive pulsed ruby laser is complete! In this video I'm feeding the flashlamp about 13kJ, which is a ton of electrical energy. In fact, this is probably the strongest ruby laser on YouTube. More destruction to come soon!

BIG thank you to Esco Optics for making me the mirrors for the laser. It turns out that finding mirrors that don't vaporize in a massive laser cavity like this is difficult, but coming up with the right coating was no problem for the Esco engineers.

It's been a while since my last video, so I decided to give you an update on what's going on! Since my last vid I've moved from IL to NY and I have started grad school classes. I do like the program, but it has kept me very busy!

I finished the power supply for the ruby laser, and in this vid I fire up the lamp trigger. I'm a big fan of electrophoresis power supplies, because they provide a cheap and programmable source of high voltage DC! They can be had on eBay for as low as $50 (but DON"T buy one if you aren't experienced with electricity. One wrong move and you're dead on the floor.) What's left for me is to mount the lamp/ruby and then build the optical resonator.

The electroplating setup did not work as well as I'd have liked, but once I get some polishing tools I'll see if I can make it bright. [Ссылки могут видеть только зарегистрированные пользователи]
